What Is an SiO₂ Ceramic Coating?

SiO₂ coatings can provide excellent gloss, slickness, hydrophobic water behavior, and easier maintenance. They are also easier to formulate into consumer-friendly products that provide an immediate visual improvement and are forgiving to apply.
But gloss and water beading are only part of what makes a ceramic coating perform.
A vehicle is exposed to UV radiation, road film, detergents, bird droppings, bug splatter, industrial fallout, hard-water spotting, salt, and repeated washing. A ceramic coating must continue performing through those conditions—not just look impressive immediately after application.
Most SiO₂ coatings are less durable in real-world use than SiC coatings. Over time, UV exposure, detergents, road film, environmental contamination, and routine washing can reduce their performance.
What Is an SiC Ceramic Coating?
SiC is Silicon Carbide.

Does a Ceramic Coating Prevent Scratches?
Ceramic coatings can improve scratch and mar resistance, but they are not scratch-proof.
That is an important distinction.
A properly installed ceramic coating creates a more durable, chemically resistant surface that can help reduce fine wash marring and minor surface damage. It also makes contamination easier to remove, which can reduce the need for aggressive scrubbing that causes additional scratches.
But a ceramic coating is not a thick physical barrier. It cannot prevent every scratch from improper washing, contact with objects, automatic car-wash brushes, or road debris.
A coating should be viewed as part of a complete protection system:
- Ceramic coating improves gloss, chemical resistance, easier cleaning, and resistance to fine scratching and marring.
